I'm trying to set up the shopping cart and do have the inventory control turned on however, it is allowing me to place items which exceed the quantity on hand in the shopping cart.  I do NOT want to allow back orders as many one of a kind items that I sell will not be available to re-order.  I've tried the maximum quantity setting in the product details but the message that it displays is that  we are restricting the number of items that can be order.  I want it to display that only xx quantity can be ordered because that's all that's in stock.

If you have "track inventory" turned on from the Product Statuses page, the cart will not allow you to order more than an item's current on hand quantity unless that item's product status is marked "back order." You can change this from the Product Statuses page as well. If you believe you have things set up correctly and are still seeing the problem, could you provide me with a link to an example item that exhibits this behavior?
